Siward Successfully Develops Industry's Largest 6-Inch Synthetic Quartz, Pioneering Advanced Chip Applications

Siward has achieved a major milestone in quartz crystal technology with the successful development of the industry's largest 6-inch synthetic quartz, positioning the company at the forefront of advanced chip applications.

As information and communication technology (ICT) products continue to expand in application, quartz crystal technology has rapidly evolved over the past two decades toward smaller sizes and higher frequencies. Traditional processes, which cut crystals from rods smaller than 1 inch into chips followed by grinding, polishing, and slicing, are increasingly insufficient to meet the performance demands of next-generation high-end products.

To address market trends, the quartz crystal industry has recently adopted semiconductor manufacturing technologies, including coating, photolithography, and MEMS microelectromechanical processing applied to synthetic quartz wafers, accelerating product miniaturization and frequency enhancement. As the technology matures, MEMS wafer sizes have increased from 2 inches and 3 inches to 4 inches, with further expansion underway to maximize production efficiency.

However, scaling wafer size relies not only on advanced processing but also on the quality of raw materials. Growing large synthetic quartz requires precise adjustment of growth parameters according to target sizes to ensure crystal characteristics meet application requirements. The seed crystal used for large rods is especially critical, requiring multiple generations of cultivation to achieve high-quality standards.

After two years of dedicated research, Siward successfully completed the first growth of a 6-inch synthetic quartz in August 2023, becoming one of the few companies in the industry capable of producing quartz of this size. The material supports a variety of cut angles, including TF, AT, and ST, and can be extended to advanced ultra-high-frequency substrates, offering substantial future development potential.
